Many people in the beginning stages of an IT Audit/Advisory/Assurance career are unaware of how early career choices impact your options down the road. Of course, career planning is unique to each individual, and your goals will evolve over time as your life situation changes…but here are several recommendations that make sense for everyone with 1-2 years of experience:
- Diversify beyond just IT General Controls projects. ITGC reviews are a great foundation, but many employers have a bias against “Sox-heavy” ITGC testing experience. Why? Because of the perception that it is checklist-driven and does not require creative problem solving.
- Align yourself with the Managers, Sr Mgrs, and even Partners (if you can get their time) who are the most dynamic. These are the people who will expose you to more interesting and diverse projects during your time at the firm. They will also be great contacts down the road as people leave the firm for new opportunities.
- Like coffee and/or beer? Make a list of 3 people within your firm who are influential, and ask them if they will join you one day either before or after work so you can “pick their brain” on how to set yourself up for similar success. I guarantee at least 1 of those conversations will lead to new opportunities for growth at the firm. If it doesn’t, send me the bill for whatever you spent and I’ll refund your money, no questions asked.
If you do these things, you can help ensure that while you’re working for your firm, your firm is also Working for You.
Eventually (if not already) you will receive an onslaught of contact from recruiters. Most are working under intense pressure to make a quick “placement,” and therefore put high pressure on you to make a change. I don’t run my firm like that. My goal is to earn your trust and become the resource you think of first if you decide to explore the market. I hope the information I’ve shared is a good first step toward building a relationship that will have a positive impact as you make the choices that lead to your next career milestone.
